"Behind The Stone"

This new album from Nigel Mazlyn Jones marks a return to the songwriting roots which made first his name over 20 years ago.

RARE NEW UNPLUGGED ALBUM RELEASE

NIGEL MAZLYN JONES "BEHIND THE STONE"

Nigel Mazlyn Jones has responded to fans' requests by releasing his first new album of songs for eight years. It has taken a while to grow. The ninth LP in his long career is a collection of songs which will be familiar to audiences at gigs in the last few years.

This multi-instrumentalist has a faithful following for his brand of guitar playing with its many moods and styles from pure acoustic to raging electric. This flexibilty recently led to composing for a BBC2 TV feature based on one of his songs and for national BBC radio. Three songs from these broadcasts feature on the album.

The last album releases were the all instrumental "ANGELS OVER WATER" in 1994, and "LIVE WITH FRIENDS" in '97, featuring Guy Evans from Van Der Graaf Generator and Nik Turner from Hawkwind in some great moments at live gigs.

The new album "BEHIND THE STONE" gives the lead to acoustic six and twelve string guitars to build the powerful atmospheres for which he is renowned. Acoustic guitars don't often sound this good and there are no digital sounds in sight. Amongst the guest players are Phil Beer of Show Of Hands on violin, Steve Jolliffe of Tangerine Dream on flute and sax and Guy Evans of Van Der Graaf on percussion.

The songs, fluid and flowing, go beyond mere surface tensions as they delve for hidden emotions. The arrangements are mostly sparse and the result is nicely chilled, with Nigel still strongly stirred by ecological and nuclear issues, but never shaken. The veteran of folk clubs and festivals explains his current style change:

"I have tried to feature the pure acoustic sounds much more. There's passion over issues none of us can ignore and I'm still ever optimistic. Love and nature are ever-present themes and the longer I live, the older I get, the deeper it goes. Especially living in Cornwall, behind the stone,"

The same attitude was reflected in the half hour BBC radio feature, "The Beast That Can Talk", and the BBC2 TV programme "Planet For Sale", which is the title of his next album scheduled for release next year.
